One-of-a-Kind Lab Tests Image Quality

RIT Research Corporation tackles the issues of color, light and form in their newly created RITRC Image Quality Laboratory.

Aimed at independently evaluating output from a rapidly growing host of digital printing systems, the laboratory houses a full complement of hardware and software analytical tools necessary to do a complete battery of objective tests in the following areas: paper testing, image quality testing, physical testing and print testing.

The laboratory serves as the centerpiece of RITRC’s image quality services. RITRC provides Image Quality Analysis, Evaluation, Recommendation and Implementation in three discrete areas: Branded Image Quality, Proprietary Image Quality and Image Quality Implementation.

“Our knowledge and expertise in the area of image quality, coupled with our affiliation with the leading technical institution in printing, imaging and photography in the world, Rochester Institute of Technology, makes this laboratory the premier location for companies looking to test their color Image Quality,” commented Bill Erickson, Technology Director, RITRC.

This is evidenced by RITRC’s recent partnership with LexJet Corporation, a pioneer in the wide format ink jet printing industry, to develop standards for the emerging digital photography industry.

RITRC is currently conducting 32 different tests for LexJet that measure virtually all important image attributes including color gamut volume, susceptibility to ozone exposure and drying time. Custom tests can also be developed to satisfy special customer needs.

“Our position is a simple one”, stated Ron Simkins, President of LexJet Corporation. “We are setting a performance threshold for all companies who wish to participate with LexJet in this new market and that threshold will be to adhere to strict, independent standards or run the risk of falling behind those manufacturers who do adhere to those standards”, he commented. “We are raising the barrier to entry to this new market and establishing a responsible set of guidelines and criteria that will fairly, accurately and independently establish standards while at the same time, properly setting expectations for end users.”

Regarding their decision to partner with RITRC, Simkins went on to say, “LexJet can afford the best and when we wanted the best, we went to RIT Research Corporation.” He added, “ The standards set by RITRC will be the standards for this new technology for years to come.”

As a partner with LexJet in this new venture, DuPont Imaging Technologies also recognized the need for standards in the industry. “Finally there will be a non-biased, technically competent source for performance related information to help end users choose the products that best meet their needs”, said Ray A. Work III, Ph.D., New Business Development Manager, DuPont Color Proofing.
