LexJet’s Sunset Photo and Fine Art Media Win Hot One Awards
For the second year in a row, LexJet has been honored as a recipient of Professional Photographer magazine’s prestigious Hot One Award for its new inkjet photo and fine art media, Sunset Fibre Elite 285g and Sunset Select Gloss Canvas. Last year, LexJet was honored with Hot One Awards for Sunset Photo eSatin 300g and Sunset Fibre Gloss.
“Looking at this year’s award winners, we see a collection of advanced, forward-thinking products,” says Jeff Kent, Hot One Editor for Professional Photographer magazine. “The 2008 Hot One Award winners represent the best of the best in terms of usability and value for price.”
The winners were chosen by a panel of practicing professional photographers, who were asked to vote only on categories that fit within their areas of expertise. For the 2008 awards, nearly 150 companies competed in 58 categories, representing 220 products.
“The judges’ choices reflect the extremely positive feedback we’re receiving from our customers about Sunset Fibre Elite and Sunset Select Gloss Canvas,” says Alex Ried, LexJet’s product manager. “Both products fit nicely into our Sunset media portfolio, which includes photo, fine art and fibre-based paper, as well as canvas and media compatible with solvent and UV-curable printing technologies. Our customers appreciate the freedom of choice they have with Sunset, and the fact that all of our media is developed based on their particular printing needs.”
Sunset Fibre Elite 285g won a Hot One Award in the Glossy Paper category. Sunset Fibre Elite was developed based on feedback from users of Sunset Fibre Gloss who were looking for a super-smooth, bright white glossy surface in a fibre paper. It is available in standard sheet sizes and roll widths up to 60 inches.
Sunset Select Gloss Canvas won the Fine Art Paper category. The canvas answers customer requests for a smooth gloss version of LexJet’s popular Sunset Select Matte Canvas, with exceptional consistency from print to print, unrivaled color reproduction, and excellent detail. It can be stretched or mounted and is available in standard roll widths from 17-60 inches.
Both Sunset photo and fine art media are backed by LexJet’s personal customer service, warranty, and one- to two-day UPS ground delivery anywhere in the Continental U.S. from LexJet’s nationwide distribution centers. Protect Your Data
Avoid data-loss disaster with these tools and techniques for effective data storage and backup.
By Tom Hauenstein
During the Great Output Seminar Tour many photographers have asked me about proper data back-up procedures. Almost everyone who creates digital images has lost crucial information due to some sort of hard drive crash or malfunction.
External Hard Drives
Memory has become rather cost-effective. Think about how much your first 1-Gig flash card cost compared to your most recent purchase. The same can be said about external hard drives. If you’re in the market for a new external hard drive, here are some hints…
The very first thing you should look for is an external hard drive with multiple disks, known as a RAID system. A lot of people will buy a single-disk hard drive and partition it. Partitioning a hard drive is when you take a single hard drive and divide it into smaller segments that act as individual hard drives within the primary hard drive.
Partitioning causes a lot of wear and tear on your hard drive, which can also cause it to fail prematurely. Therefore, you should get a hard drive with multiple disks so that there is no need for partitioning. If a hard drive does crash in a RAID system, you simply purchase a new disk and plug it in and it will automatically back up to that disk. It’s safe and it’s easy.

Ranch Hand: Custom Leather-Bound Book Printed on Hot Press Rag
Todd Winslow Pierce and local printing partner, Photo Effects, build a leather-bound custom book for one of Colorado's final frontiers.
Located on 10,000 acres of pristine sage land surrounded by snow-capped peaks on Colorado's Western Slope, Castle Peak Ranch represents one of the state's few remaining reserves of undeveloped private land. The owner, who purchased the parcel about five years ago, decided that the ranch would be dedicated to preserving the pristine nature of its vistas, effectively protecting the fauna and flora that call the ranch home.
The owner called on Todd Winslow Pierce, a photographer based in Vail, Colo., to document the topography and ecology of the ranch and provide artwork from the photographic study to adorn the walls of his home and office.
The project would instead lead to the production of 25 extremely high-end leather-bound books printed on a custom lightweight version of Sunset Hot Press Rag.
As Pierce explored the land, he became convinced that the land deserved the intensive scrutiny and documentation that only a book could convey.
"It wasn't until my third visit that I began to see the possibilities. It's the kind of place that doesn't strike a chord immediately, but reveals itself over time. I went back in the winter, which revealed an entirely new character to the location. The spring time, summer and fall were also very distinct," explains Pierce. "I realized there was a lot of depth and I had already captured over a hundred images. I sat down and talked with the owner about it, and we decided to do something much larger and create a book that would celebrate the natural heritage of the land."
