Photography Competitions Can Help You Gain Exposure

Entering photography competitions provides a valuable opportunity to have your work seen by influential experts in contemporary fine-art photography as well as leading magazine publishers. Here are six competitions to consider, listed by order of when the entries are due:

EPSON International Photographic Pano Awards: Enter by April 30. The inaugural 2010 Epson International Awards will honor excellence in panoramic photography. Prizes worth more than $13,000 (including an Epson Stylus Pro 4880) will be awarded to professionals, non-professionals and/or students who submit the best panoramic images related either to Nature (including landscapes) or The Built Environment (including architecture). The entries will be judged by some of the world’s top panoramic photographers and industry professionals, including Christian Fletcher, David Hugh Evans, Nick Rains, Jaspal Jandu, Peter Eastway, Christian Fleury, Tom Putt, Glenn Beanland, Michelle Novak, and Doug Seal. The 2010 Photo Review Competition: Enter between May 1 and 15. The Photo Review , an acclaimed critical journal of photography, is currently accepting entries for its 26th annual photography competition. In addition to exhibiting the work of the prize-winning photographers in the gallery at The University of the Arts in Philadelphia, The Photo Review will reproduce accepted entries in its 2010 competition issue and on its website.

The competition judge will be Brian Paul Clamp, director of CLAMPART, one of New York’s leading galleries for contemporary photography. Awards include imaging-related products and services from the competition’s sponsors, including LaserSoft Imaging, Calumet Photographic, Digital Silver Imaging, Lensbabies, and Lowepro.

 The entry fee is $30 for up to three prints, slides, or images on CD and $5 each for up to two additional images. All entries must be received by mail between May 1 and 15. Download a prospectus at www.photoreview.org/compete.htm.

Hearst Competition

Hearst 8 x 10 Photography Biennial: Enter by May 31. To recognize and showcase the professional work for talented young photographers, Hearst Corporation is conducting its second Hearst 8 x 10 Biennial. Eight winners will be chosen to have their work featured in two exhibition spaces in the atrium of the company’s NY headquarters.  Hearst will publish both digital and print catalogs, showcasing works chosen by a 10-judge panel that includes editors, creative directors, curators, and renowned photographers.  The contest is open to all US and international freelance, amateur, and professional photographers and students between the ages of 18 and 35. The winners will be announced in September, and approximately 100 photographs will be exhibited in the two galleries of the Hearst Tower from January through May, 2011.

The 2010 Art of Photography Show: Enter by June 1 .  Now in its sixth year, this San Diego-based show continues to grow. Last year’s show attracted entries from 57 countries and more than 25,000 people to the exhibition. The judge for the 2010 show will be Natasha Egan, the associate director and curator at the Museum of Contemporary Photography in Chicago.

The Art of Photography Show offers $10,000 in awards, including $2,000 for 1st place, $1600 for 2nd place, $1,200 for 3 rd place, $800 for 4th place, and $400 for 11 winners of Honorable Mentions. More than 100 of the top entries will be featured in an exhibition at the Lyceum Theatre Gallery from Aug .28-Nov. 7 and will appear in a printed show catalog.

Photography Book Now 2010 : Enter by July, 15. To celebrate the most creative and innovative self-published photography books, Blurb is conducting its third annual Photography Book Now competition. Grand prize is $25,000. Entries will be accepted in three categories: Fine Art, Editorial, and Photography Portfolio. The finalists’ books in each category will become part of the permanent collections at the International Center for Photography, the Annenberg Space for Photography, and the George Eastman House.

Photography book expert Darius Himes will lead a panel of judges that includes Lesley Martin, publisher of Aperture, Monica Allende, photo editor of the London Sunday Times, photographer Martin Parr, David Fahey, gallery director of Fahey Klein, Erin O’Toole, assistant curator of the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, and other distinguished experts. HP is sponsoring the $25,000 grand prize; Category award winners will receive prices provided by other sponsors, including Sony Electronics, Wacom, Digital Photo Pro magazine, Photo District News, X-Rite, Maine Media Workshops.

HP Magnum Expression Photo Award

HP Magnum Expression Photography Award: Enter by Sept. 30. Magnum Photos, in association with HP, have announced the second annual Expression Photography Award. The award was established with the goal of raising awareness and inspiring change through projects that use photography as an expressive medium. Its mission is to help discover and illuminate compelling documentary photography. Entries will be judged by an international panel of four Magnum photographers (Jim Goldberg, Martin Parr, Trent Parke, and Mark Power) and one representative from HP’s large-format printing group.

One chosen winner will receive a $10,000 grant to support the continuation of his/her work, plus an HP Designjet Z3200 photo printer and additional prizes from contributing partners Blurb and PhotoShelter. Two honorable mentions and the remaining 17 finalists will also receive awards to support and encourage their photographic work. There is no cost to enter. You can submit images from a completed project, or one that is still in progress.
