When you turn off color management in your printer and print from Photoshop, these ICC profiles enable you to preview on your calibrated monitor screen how your prints will look before you hit the print button. This step, which is known as soft-proofing, can help you avoid wasting valuable time, ink, and paper making reprints if the first print doesn’t come out looking just the way you expected. LexJet has used top-quality color-measuring devices to create ICC profiles for all LexJet-branded inkjet materials.
The profile you choose to download will depend on what make and model printer you use, and what print settings you intend to use.
What steps to take when downloading will depend on whether you plan to print from Photoshop or the Canon imagePROGRAF Print Plug-in for Photoshop or the ImagePrint RIP (Fig. 2).
For Printing from Photoshop or the Canon iPF Plug-In: Once you’ve located the profile you need, simply click on it and save the file to your desktop. After you’ve downloaded the .icc or .icm file to your desktop, copy the file to the profile folder on your computer. Where the profile file is located on your computer depends on what type of operating system you use:
Note that when copying the downloaded profiles from your desktop to your operating system, Mac users may need to use the “option” key when clicking so that the file doesn’t open as a text file. Windows users may need to right click, and use the ‘Save File As’ option.
Users of Windows Vista/XP can also right click on the .icc file, then click on “Install” when the dropdown menu opens up.
For Printing from ImagePrint: Click on model of printer you use, then choose whether you want to print through the Driver or the RIP. Click on RIPs, then click on ImagePrint. From here, you can download a Profile Manager (Fig 3). This is a free utility that will automatically connect to the library of profiles created by ColorByte Software, the company that created ImagePrint. Profiles you select will automatically be delivered to the proper location on your hard drive.
Past issues of In Focus have discussed the importance of keeping your monitor calibrated and how to soft proof in Photoshop.
