Dr. Joe’s most recent newsletter contained a chart showing that as of Dec. 2009, commercial printing employed 500,000 people, a 37.6% change from the 801,200 people employed in the field as of Dec 2001.
In that same period, the number of people employed in graphic design fell by 25.2% (from 82,100 in 2001 to 61,400 in 2009) and the number of people employed by ad agencies dropped 18.4% (from 502,800 in 2000 to 410,500 in 2009).
In his blog post entitled How Printing Industry Employment Has Changed Since 2000, Dr. Joe Webb noted that, “The niche that had the lowest rate of decline was commercial screen printing, possibly the result of promotional goods and display items.”
He points out it’s difficult to monitor trends in digital-printing employment because digital printing is lumped into a miscellaneous category with other forms of printing in which employment is declining.
Plus, the data doesn’t include freelance workers or printing workers in in-plant or corporate printing departments.
