Recognition through Competition: Three Upcoming Photography Competitions
Whether you’re seeking to make a name for yourself in the New York art world, secure funding for your next photography project, or get your photography work in front of more designers and publishers, here are three competitions that might be able to help you:

EXPOSURE Competition, deadline June 17: The Artists Wanted organization in New York is currently accepting entries for its EXPOSURE Competition. The competition will help promote the work of photographers “who speak exquisitely in the language of lenses and aperture—those who create without bounds.”

The grand-prize winner will receive $2,008 in cash, a full-press promotional campaign, and other prizes. Plus, the winning photos will be projected at a massive scale on buildings throughout the top art neighborhoods of New York City—Chelsea, Dumbo, and Williamsburg. The winning works will also be featured in an event at the Leo Kesting Gallery in Manhattan on August 9.

The top student photographer in the competition will receive a $1,000 scholarship and a feature in The Annual, a year-end catalog of emerging talent that is distributed to art dealers, collectors, galleries and press throughout the New York art community and at international art fairs and exhibitions. The educator of the top student photographer will receive a $500 discretionary grant and a feature in The Annual for teaching excellence.

The public will have a chance to vote on all the portfolios of the Artists Wanted site and select their top artist. The People’s Choice Photographer will receive a $500 grant and a feature in The Annual.

All types of photography may be entered, including fashion, fine art, still life, portrait, landscape, nature, travel, photojournalism, documentary, street photography, abstract, night, and alternative process. Entrants can submit up to four images, plus a personal image of themselves.

Deadline for entries is June 17. The winner will be announced July 15. The winners will be selected by a panel that includes New York Times photo editor Patrick Witty, model Tiiu Kuik, and gallery owner David Kesting.

Artists Wanted is a collaborative project between several New York artists and creative organization that is working to build lasting opportunities for emerging talent. The competition sponsors include Photo Shelter archiving and online photo sales site, JPG Magazine, the 3rd Ward multi-arts space for creative professionals, the Endless Room website for artists and collectors, the Williamsburg Gallery Association, and the Leo Kesting Gallery.

Win $25,000 from the Photography.Book.Now International Salon and Symposium, deadline July 14: If you’ve self-published a photography book that you believe is particularly innovative or creative, consider entering it in the competition currently being conducted by the Photography.Book.Now International Salon and Symposium.

If your photo book is chosen as the grand-prize winner, you will receive $25,000 to finish (or start) a photography project of your choice and a trip to San Francisco for the awards ceremony. Entries will be accepted in two categories. The General category celebrates the diversity of the photographic medium. In this category, you can submit whatever type of book you choose. In the Themed category, you can submit books that demonstrate how a collection of photography on a certain topic or concept can create a narrative when presented in book form.

The deadline for entries is July 14.The entries will be judged by a jury of editors, publishers, curators, and photographers under the leadership of photographer and photo-book expert Darius Himes. The Photography.Book.Now symposium is presented by the photo-book publishing service Blurb, with support from sponsors such as American Photo, Photo District News (PDN), Livebooks, Flickr, SmugMug, and JPG Magazine.

The winning books will be showcased in a traveling salon that will also feature a half-day symposium with panel discussions and presentations exploring the modern photography-book movement.

Create Awards 2008, deadline June 27: If you want your photography to be seen by more graphic designers, art directors, and other creative professionals, consider entering the Create Awards competition. The top entries in the competition will be showcased in the Create Awards Gallery at the Create Chaos 2008 event Oct. 13-17 at the Orlando World Center Marriott Resort in Florida.

The Create Chaos conference will inform, inspire, educate, and connect creative professionals across industry boundaries, including graphic design, photography, advertising, film and video production, animation, printing, Web, and publishing.

You have until June 27 to enter the Create Awards Competition, which features more than 300 categories in eight fields. More than $125,000 worth of prizes will be awarded. The Gold winner in each discipline will receive a free all-access, full-conference pass to Create Chaos.

All of the entered work must have appeared in the marketplace between April 1, 2007 and May 30, 2008, and have been produced for commercial purposes and be the result of paid or pro bono creative services.

The photography segment of the competition features 29 categories, honoring creative achievements in specific fields of photography, applied photography, and support services such as retouching. Below are the categories in which you can enter your photography work. For complete details, and to enter online, visit www.thecreateawards.com.
