Photographic Patchwork: Quilting with Photos on Fabric

Coby Maxeiner of CMAX Photography in Alton, Ill., found a distinctive way to display class portraits using his Epson 7800 and 3P Polygloss FR fabric from LexJet. The final quilt tiled 15 images together in one piece that was used as part of a charity dinner auction.

Quilt

Each tile of the quilt was printed in 24 in. x 24 in. section, which were then cut down to 12-in. square tiles. A volunteer seamstress then sewed the panels together with three-inch strips of fabric to bring them all together.

“We came up with the idea of photographing the individual classes at the school – not in a traditional, school-portrait style, but a fun picture of each class – and to take those individual pictures and tile them into a quilt,” explains Maxeiner. “So we set up a day to get all 15 classes out and we literally only had about five or ten minutes with each class. My original idea was to do the tiles in color, but they decided they wanted them all in black-and-white. My LexJet account specialist, Bill Weiser, wasn’t sure how black-and-white would look on the fabric, but I ran a couple of tests and it looked great.”

Maxeiner has an Epson 7800 with ImagePrint that he got from LexJet, and prints trade shows and window displays. With the leftover fabric from the school project, Maxeiner has also printed images for pillows.

“I went to the Great Output Seminar in Chicago. Even though it was about five hours each way, it was well worth it. I got some great ideas and found out about some new products I’m interested in trying. I’m debating on whether or not I should upgrade this printer or get a smaller format printer for our smaller print orders as well,” says Maxeiner.
