Hassle-Free, Consistent Print Protection with Sunset Coatings

LexJet, a leading developer of print protection laminate films since 1994, has introduced ready-to-use, self-leveling, fast-drying water-based acrylic coatings designed for brush, roller, and spray applications. Sunset Gloss Coating and Sunset Satin Coating take all the hassle and guesswork out of coating canvas and other print media for photography, fine-art, and commercial applications.

“It doesn’t just smear over the top and dry like the other coatings we’ve used for our canvas reproductions. It soaks into the canvas so you can actually see the texture, which is important to us,” says Jansen Sterba of Black and White Overnight Photo Lab in Oklahoma City. “Plus, any time we coated over black or any dark color with the old coating, it would show the texture of the rollers from one pass to the next. The lines would show up in the finish, but Sunset Gloss Coating doesn’t do that at all and appears to self-level.”

The finish is tough and flexible, contains UV inhibitors for maximum protection from the elements, and is non-yellowing. Moreover, it’s ready to use out of the can and does not need to be diluted, which saves time in the print-finishing process and ensures consistency from print to print.

“For the past few years, LexJet has been documenting the pros and cons of the liquid coatings our customers have been using to finish their prints, particularly with canvas since canvas is most likely to show the weaknesses of any given coating,” explains Alex Ried, LexJet’s product manager. “Based on our customers’ feedback we developed a product – one with a gloss finish and another with a satin or semi-gloss finish – that addressed their need for a simple, durable, economical, and consistent coating.”

Though it was developed for LexJet’s Sunset canvas media, it has proven to work equally well with other canvas products, and fine-art and photo papers. Both Sunset Gloss Coating and Sunset Satin Coating are available in one-quart and one-gallon cans.
