Wacom Unveils Intuos4 Pen Tablet

To provide greater artistic control when retouching images or creating artwork, Wacom’s new Intuos 4 pen tablet has been engineered to capture even the slightest nuances of pen pressure against the surface of the tablet.

On the Intuos4, the 1,024 pressure levels in the Intuous3 have been doubled to 2,048. This means the pen will more accurately detect fingertip nuances and provide an even more realistic expression of paintbrush touches. A second-generation Tip Sensor in the pen tip has reduced the minimum weight sensed from by the pen tip from 10 grams to 1 gram, providing artists with the best possible power of expression when drawing with a very light touch.

“Now, pressure-sensitive support can start with an incredibly light touch, emulating the same feel, response and result derived from working with traditional creative tools such as brushes, markers, and pens,” said Don Varga, senior product manager for Wacom Technology Corp.

The tablets come in four sizes:  small ($229), medium ($369), large ($499), and extra-large ($789). So that you can be more comfortable as you work with your images, the new design puts all of the customizable ExpressKey and Touch Ring on one side of the tablet, making them easily available to your non-dominant hand. On the three larger tablets, illuminated (OLED) displays remind you of the current function of each ExpressKey.

“Wacom has totally nailed it with the Intuos4, and it has already changed the way I work in Adobe Photoshop,” says Scott Kelby, president of the National Association of Photoshop Professionals. “This will be the tablet that makes everyone who has ever wondered if they should be using a tablet finally get on board.”
