Jay Hsiang creates distinctive studio and trade show booth promotions with Photo Tex Fabric wall graphics and canvas gallery wraps made quickly and easily in-house.
You may remember Jay Hsiang from a previous edition of In Focus. Hsiang’s work is memorable because it’s both fashionable and timeless, plus he creates unique photo products for his customers. The last time we talked to Hsiang, he was making lamps for his wedding clients that feature images from their photo sessions.
Jay Hsiang turned a boring blank wall in his viewing room into decor with Photo Tex PSA Fabric that sells his images and his photo products.
Hsiang printed the backlit lamp images on LexJet TOUGHcoat Water-Resistant Polypropylene with his Epson Stylus Pro 7800. The lamps are given as gifts to the couples Hsiang photographs, but they also provide residual sales as people see the décor possibilities of the unusual photo lamps.
Given the success of the photo lamps, Hsiang began fishing around at LexJet for other ideas that would help boost photo product sales. Two new products that others have used successfully caught his eye: Photo Tex PSA Fabric and Hahnemuhle’s new Gallerie Wrap Stretcher Bars.
Hsiang was looking for wall art to show as samples that would sell both his photography and additional prints. He printed a sample image on Photo Tex PSA Fabric in two panels since he’s limited by his printer’s 24-inch width. He wanted something large and attention-getting for the preview area of his studio, and 24 inches just wouldn’t cut it, he says.
“It not only shows my work that large on the wall, but it gives my clients ideas on how they can use my images to decorate their homes and businesses,” says Hsiang. “I got the idea from my account specialist at LexJet, who said I could create something that looked like wallpaper with Photo Tex.”
Hsiang found that the Photo Tex was easy to apply and quite forgiving since the adhesive makes the material repositionable. Plus, he says, “The colors print on the material accurately, and black-and-white prints very nice. It’s not difficult at all to paste up, and it’s a lot easier than other materials I’ve tried to put on the wall.”
Hsiang's canvas wrap sales have gone up significantly thanks in large part to his ability to create his own wraps in-house with Hahnemuhle's Gallerie Wrap Stretcher Bars and Sunset Select Gloss Canvas.
Hsiang also tried the Hahnemuhle Gallerie Wrap Stretcher Bars for additional wall art in his studio and for his trade-show booth. He reports that the new in-house gallery wraps have been a huge success, boosting these high-end, value-added sales.
“The gallery wrap system is very convenient. I used to send it out to the lab, but now I can do it myself. I don’t have to wait for it to come back, and it doesn’t take long at all to put it together,” says Hsiang. “We get a lot of comments about the displays, and we sell a lot of them at the trade shows. We print different samples that show the different types of photography we do, like glamour, family, wedding, and portraits. And, it shows all the different things we can do with canvas.”
Hsiang uses LexJet’s Sunset Select Gloss Canvas for the wraps, and says he prefers a gloss to a matte finish since the gloss lends itself best to his style of photography, which is extremely colorful and vibrant.
“The color in my photographs really stands out with the Sunset Select Gloss Canvas. It has a very wide color gamut so it looks great on the wall,” says Hsiang. “The only problem I’m having is with the width of my printer; I would like to do larger canvas wraps and be able to print out bigger wall murals as well.”
