Have You Updated Your Storage Lately?
Data storage is one of those topics that you’d rather not think much about—partly because it can seem so geeky and black-box mysterious. Plus, you have so many more immediate business challenges to worry about.

But data storage is a topic you can’t afford to ignore because so much of your current and future income depends on uninterrupted, reliable access to all of the digital assets you are  accumulating each time you shoot.

Some of your digital assets may be generating income for you now. Other digital assets may gain value over time if some of the images (or videos) you shoot today are regarded as historically interesting 30 or 40 years from now. For example, check out the images of a young, unknown Elvis Presley that recently appeared in Vanity Fair magazine.

LexJet would be interested in learning more about how photographers in different segments of the industry currently approach data storage:

  • Do you use one type of system for back-up and restoration and another type of system for long-term archiving?
  • Have you experienced any catastrophic incidents that caused you pay more attention to your storage requirements?
  • How often (if ever) do you go through your old files to reduce duplication and free up more space?
  • Have you come up with a good approach that provides the right balance of performance, capacity, security and speed?
  •  What types of questions would you like to see answered with regards to data storage strategies?

If you have data-storage stories, ideas, or insights you’d be willing to share, please contact Eileen Fritsch, eileen.fritsch@lexjet.com. Your input will help us develop articles we can share with other photographers and useful insights we can pass along to manufacturers of storage devices, equipment, and services. Thank you!
