“It covers imager’s purchasing plans, challenges faced, and expectations for the future,” said SGIA Business Information Associate Katy Sauer Lellelid. The Industry in Review Report examines how future imaging trends and examines the specialty imaging industry within the US economy as a whole.

In an SGIA webinar on Dec. 16, Lellelid included tables showing some of the data that will be included in the 2009 report. One table showed statistics on actual and anticipated growth in 2009. Other tables listed the graphic markets and applications that survey respondents expected to grow, stay the same, or decline over the next three to five years.
The figures below show the percentages of SGIA survey respondents who expect these markets and applications to grow over the next 3 to 5 years. These represent the five highest percentages on the tables which each list more than 15 different markets and applications:
In terms of how many companies grew in 2009, here’s a breakdown the percentage of survey respondents who reported growth (ranging from 1% to more than 100%), no growth, or “negative growth” (ranging from -1% to -30% or more).
One webinar attendee asked whether the SGIA surveys took into account how many graphic-imaging firms had closed up shop in 2009 and how many new companies entered the field. Lellelid acknowledged that SGIA didn’t have those figures. So, she was unable to speculate about how much of the growth experienced by 53% of the survey respondents resulted from graphics-work that came from companies that went out of business in 2009.
Many respondents seem cautiously optimistic about 2010. About 31% of the respondents expect their graphics businesses to grow by 1 to 9% in 2010; about 26% are expecting to grow between 10 to 14% next year.
