Selling Sustainability to Designers
If you sell to designers who have made environmental responsibility a key priority, consider downloading The Designer’s Field Guide to Sustainability. Although this six-page guide isn’t directed specifically toward graphic designers, the more you understand about how a designer thinks, the more successful you can be in recommending new products and services.

The Designer’s Field Guide to Sustainability suggests 15 things designers should think about when designing a new product and gives examples of why each item matters. The guide urges designers to:

  • Question the premise of the design
  • Make it less complex
  • Make it more useful
  • Reduce material variety
  • Avoid toxic or harmful materials and chemicals
  • Reduce size and weight
  • Optimize manufacturing processes
  • Design packaging in parallel with products
  • Design for upgradeability
  • Create durable and high-quality designs
  • Design for life after death
  • Make it modular
  • Use recycled, recyclable and renewable materials
  • Minimize fasteners
  • Don’t use paint

The guide was developed by LUNAR Design, which has created consumer, technology and medical products for clients such as Apple Computer, Cisco Systems, HP, Microsoft, Motorola, Philips, Oral-B, Palm, Pepsi and Sony.
