National Portrait Gallery Adds Five Satterwhite Prints to Its Collection

Hahnemuhle has proudly announced that when The Smithsonian’s National Portrait Gallery selected five portraits by photographer Al Satterwhite for its permanent collection, he chose to print them on Hahnemuhle FineArt papers.

Al Satterwhite used Hahnemuhle PhotoRag Baryta 315gsm to print this image of NASCAR driver Richard Petty for the permanent collection of the National Portrait Gallery.

The National Portrait Gallery brings history to life by showcasing the many diverse individuals who have shaped U.S. culture. For example, the Gallery’s permanent Champions exhibition honors the dynamic American sports figures whose impact has extended beyond their sports to make them a part of the larger story of our nation.

The five portraits by Al Satterwhite added to the National Portrait Gallery include black-and-white images of baseball star Henry “Hank” Aaron, jockey Willie Shoemaker, and racecar drivers Mario Andretti and Richard Petty and a color portrait of tennis champion Chris Evert.

“I feel very honored to have my work selected to hang in this historical institution,” says Satterwhite. “I had shown some of my images to one of the curators who asked to see a selection of my photographs from the ‘70s. After a committee review, they chose the five portraits and asked me to provide them with 11 x 14-in. prints of each—a size that is representative of many fine-art prints from that era.”

He chose to print the four black-and-white images on Hahnemuhle’s Photo Rag Baryta 315 gsm. For the color portrait of Chris Evert, he chose Hahnemuhle’s FineArt Pearl 285 gsm.

“In my opinion, the Hahnemuhle Digital FineArt Collection includes some of the most beautiful printing papers available,” says Satterwhite. “I felt that these two papers made the images sparkle. Also, the warmth of the baryta is just enough to add a touch of realism to the skin tones.”

Al Satterwhite worked as a photojournalist, editorial, and advertising photographer before pursuing work in feature films and TV spots. Satterwhite is known for his saturated color images and keen sense of design and composition and has written books and taught workshops on the subjects.

As a freelance magazine photographer, he worked on assignment for many publications, including Car & Driver, Fortune, Life, Look, Money, Newsweek, People, Playboy, Saturday Evening Post, Sports Illustrated, Time, and Travel & Leisure. During his 15 years of advertising work, his clients included American Express, Coca Cola, Dole, DuPont Nikon, Oldsmobile, and many other well-known companies.
